The Sun Temple at Modhera is famous Sun Temple dedicated to the Sun God. Ths sun god is referred to as Surya or Aditya. The temple was built by King Bhimdev in 1026 AD. King Bhimdev belonged to the Solanki dynasty, which was considered Suryavanshi or descendents of the Sun God. The structure of temple reflects architecture of Solanki dynasty.
Sun Temple was so designed that the first rays of the rising sun fall directly on image of Lord Surya. The Sun temple has a sanctum, a pradakshina patha and a sabha mandap in front. Beautiful carved images of the Sun God on the sanctum portrayed.
The temple was once destroyed by the Mahmud of Ghazni. However, enough has reamined of the temple to convey its grandeur.
In front of the temple, there is carved, stepped tank known as Surya Kund or Rama Kund.
Devotees perform ceremonial ablutions here before worshipping the Sun God. The structure of temple consists of Sabha Mandap and Guda Mandap. Sabha Mandap is big hall used for meeting and conference. Sabha Mandap is open from all sides. Guda Mandap is the original temple of Lord Sun where rays of the rising sun fall directs on image of Lord Surya.
